4. Identify available sources of finding therapists in your area.

  • Web Sites
  • Therapists on the web whom you can e-mail your questions
  • Therapist directories
  • Local Phone book
  • Friend and relatives
  • Professionals that you know that may have some knowledge about psychotherapy such as:
    • Clergy/Your Spiritual Leader
    • Your health care provider
    • Your Employee Assistance Program
    • Any psychotherapist you may know socially
    • School counselors
    • Teacher

5. Assess your needs and start to consider the skills, training, experience etc, you wish your therapist to possess.

Ask for help: seek an assessment; seek a therapist to help you; seek the help of a trusted friend

6. Prioritize and simplify your options that will lead to your choice regarding the therapist factors that fit your needs.

Identify the most important elements that will be factors in your decision for a good therapist. Matching your needs and concerns with the therapists training, skills and attributes select and list them as potential therapists.

Keep factors to a manageable level (3 options) so that you do not get stuck or overwhelmed by too many factors.
